Faraaz Abdool

Faraaz Abdool is an internationally published freelance conservation and wildlife photographer/writer who specializes in birds and the issues they face worldwide. He graciously serves on the Trinidad and Tobago Bird Status and Distribution Committee (formerly the Trinidad and Tobago Rare Bird Committee), and leads birding trips on both islands. Faraaz also runs yearly birding and wildlife tours to East Africa. Faraaz is also the author of “Casual Birding in Trinidad & Tobago”, an extensive volume designed to market T&T as an attractive and easy birding destination as well as to educate the local population about their avian cohabitants. Faraaz cultivates wildlife consciousness via his words and images, in a last-ditch attempt to reconnect humans with nature and save the world.

Dr Derek W. Keats

Derek was biology professor for over 20 years, and discovered several species new to science (not birds, alas), and even has a species named after him. His studies have encompassed ecology, systematics and phylogeny, as well as technology in education. He has published around 80 academic papers, and more than 100 magazine articles in which he has brought science and nature to lay persons. He has also been a university Deputy Vice Chancellor, held various technology roles in university and business, and is a technology geek. Derek is an accomplished nature photographer on land and under water, with his photos appearing in over 20 books, hundreds of magazines, several mobile apps, and museum exhibits. Today he works in FinTech, but prefers to spend time photographing birds  and unravelling their stories so he can re-tell them to humans. He is co-founder and looks after the technology and arrangements for Learn-the-Birds.

Ernest Porter

Ernest is a professional wildlife photographer (specializing in action photography) and a FGASA qualified safari guide with a burning passion for raptors. Ernest has been a photographic guide for Eagle Eye Safaris since 2016, with experience in the field of teaching advanced photographic courses including Lightroom and Photoshop workshops.

Lancy Cheng

Lancy Cheng is an ornithologist with HX Hurtigruten Expeditions. He loves everything with feathers, especially gulls. With this passion, he chose to live in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the “Capital of Kumlien’s gull” in North America. He spends most of his time in the woods, by the lake or on the beach, looking for and studying birds. If not out birding, he says he would stay home with his little girl, Vega. Yes, she is a cat, and, yes, her name is from Vega gull.

Ground-hornbill researchers

Kyle and CarrieDr Kyle-Mark Middleton and Carrie Hickman are researchers at the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, University of Cape Town – Kyle as a post-doctoral fellow and Carrie as a PhD candidate. Since 2016, they have co-managed the APNR Ground Hornbill Project, dedicating their work to uncovering the complex ecology and behaviour of this iconic species. Their research is aimed at not only advancing scientific understanding, but also directly informs conservation and management strategies to safeguard Southern Ground-Hornbills in the wild.

Ivan Phillipsen

Ivan Phillipsen imageIvan is a professional naturalist guide with a background in scientific research. He recently launched a podcast called The Science of Birds. Ivan has loved animals and nature his whole life. His first obsession was with amphibians and reptiles. This interest led him to graduate school, where he studied amphibians. After earning a Master's degree in Biology and a  PhD in Zoology, he did postdoctoral research on aquatic insects. Ivan likes creepy, crawly things. Along the way, his love of nature expanded to include plants, fungi, and all animals, including birds. Birds have become Ivan's greatest passion. He's an avid birder and co-owns a birding ecotour company called Wild Latitudes. Some places where Ivan leads natural history tours are Mexico, Iceland, Alaska, Uganda, and Fiji.

Eladio Fernandez

Eladio Fernandez is an iLCP Associate Fellow, a naturalist, researcher, and an author from the Dominican Republic. He has an extensive image bank on Caribbean flora, fauna and landscapes and his work includes underwater subjects, as well as vanishing cultural rituals and practices from the Caribbean. He has co-authored the field guide Birds of the Dominican Republic and Haiti and is the author and publisher of nine photography books on nature subjects from the Greater Antilles. In 2019, Fernandez co-authored the first of a series of scientific articles describing three new species of the genus Aristolochia. Eladio Fernandez currently serves on the board of Fondo Peregrino RD, a local branch of The Peregrine Fund and in Fundación Progressio. He also serves as an environmental advisor for Fundación Propagas.
