Birdwatching in São Tomé and Príncipe, the African Galapagos
Presented on 19 February 2026
Join us in finding out why São Tomé and Príncipe should be on every birdwatchers’ bucket list. Hugo Sampaio from SPEA/BirdLife Portugal has worked in the archipelago for more than 10 years alongside BirdLife International and the local government. SPEA is now focussed in raising awareness of the country as the next upcoming birdwatchers’ destination. As the countries inhabitants rely mostly on subsistence farming (and fishing), ecotourism can be a way to provide local income and dissuade them from deforestation and illegal hunting. Get away from the beaten path and enjoy beautiful scenery, welcoming people and almost 30 endemic bird species!
