Mauritius is famous amongst conservation biologists for having saved several bird species and for having pioneered conservation techniques and strategies in the field. If you search for conservation success stories, you are likely to come across the Mauritius Kestrel (Falco punctatus) as a textbook example. From the brink of extinction in the 1970’s, the raptor was considered saved in the late 1990’s-early 2000 after intensive management of the species.

This talk will cover a brief history of the evolution of species in Mauritius and endemism, the biology and ecology of the Mauritius Kestrel, the story of its decline, the process and techniques which were needed to save it and lastly, the necessity for continuous monitoring of conservation projects as well as ongoing efforts.

This webinar is jointly hosted by Learn-the-Birds and Ebony Forest Ltd. Ebony Forest reserve’s missions are forest restoration, species recovery, raising awareness and providing training in conservation. We are sponsored by CEPF (Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund).
