Habitats of Africa is a new book project that describes the ecosystems and wildlife of Africa for birders, ecologists and naturalists in an easy-to-understand way.
Most descriptors of environments where naturalists find themselves are either oversimplified as “savanna” or “rainforest’, or very detailed botanical lists filled with jargon inaccessible to most non-botanically inclined users. The new “Habitats of Africa: A Field Guide for Birders, Naturalists and Ecologists” is part of a (HotW) series of books for the world to fill the niche between overly simplified and overly detailed. The book comprehensively treats all 74 African habitat types; we detail them in the same style as we are used to in nature field guides, illustrated with distribution maps, habitat photos, wildlife photos, silhouettes to show vegetation structure, and simplified climate graphs. The descriptions of vegetation, wildlife, ecology and conservation are backed by science but written in a style that is fun to read for higher education students and people with a keen interest in nature.
