Zen Birding in the Age of AI

Birding today spans a remarkable spectrum. For some, it is about collecting sightings, building lists, capturing photographs, or using artificial intelligence to identify and document birds. For others, it is a competitive pursuit, a social activity, a source of connection through clubs and online communities, or a meaningful contribution to conservation through citizen science. Birding can be a game, a discipline, a personal challenge, and a shared way of engaging with the natural world. This talk advocates for a deeper awareness of another dimension of birding: an approach best captured by the idea of Zen Birding.

At its heart, Zen Birding invites us to slow down, become fully present, and immerse ourselves in the experience of birds—not merely as names on a list or images in a gallery, but as living encounters that can touch our senses, sharpen our attention, and enrich our inner lives. In this way, Zen Birding becomes more than a style of birdwatching. It becomes a path toward greater self-awareness, a deeper connection with nature, and a quieter form of satisfaction. It also links closely with some of the most valuable lessons in birding fieldcraft: patience, attentiveness, stillness, listening, and the ability to read a landscape. These qualities can lead to extraordinary encounters with elusive, secretive, and rare birds in all kinds of places. From listening to the dawn chorus to watching raptors ride the thermals, many birders already practise aspects of Zen Birding, often without calling it that.
