Florida is known within the United States for its beaches and palms, perhaps even for its vast wetlands with large populations of wading birds, but its biodiversity is largely underappreciated. Did you know, for example, that Florida is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles coexist? That the same ancient dune habitat that supports the endemic Florida Scrub-Jay, also supports endemic sub-species of Grasshopper Sparrow, Burrowing Owl, and any number of other animals, including a legless lizard that swims through the sand?
With myriad habitats ranging from the temperate Panhandle through the unique Central Highlands and south into the tropical islands of the Keys, Florida has one of the largest and most diverse bird lists of any state in the nation. Join wildlife photographer, author, and conservationist Kirsten Hines to explore Florida’s wilds with its distinctive mix of birds and other wildlife.
