Migration has fascinated people for centuries. Despite the incredible discoveries of the last few decades, there is still much to discover about bird migration. Perhaps most fascinating are the questions of how migration patterns evolve, change, and adapt, as well as the broader rationale behind migration routes and destinations. While many birders are most interested in the migrants that get lost, almost everyone notices when a migrant returns, especially for vocal and obvious species such as cuckoos and falcons. Increasingly, citizen science finds its energy and participation driven by an interest in migration, and perhaps nowhere else in nature can ordinary observations contribute to our understanding of bird lifestyles and changing planetary cycles. Etienne Marais has been researching migrant warblers for over 20 years and will share some insights into this incredible phenomenon while also interrogating the potential of citizen science migration projects to involve a much wider range of people than those who currently watch birds.
